Getting Started

What age can children begin learning violin?

I welcome students from around age 4 onwards, and it's never too late to start! Whether you're a young child picking up the violin for the first time or an adult who has always wanted to play, you'll find a warm and encouraging environment here.

Do I need to own a violin before the first lesson?

Not necessarily! Come along to the first lesson and we can figure out the right size together before you invest in anything. Our local music shop offer a good rental scheme, which is a great option while younger students are still growing.

How do I choose the right size violin for my child?

Violins come in lots of different sizes, from 1/16 right up to full size. The right fit depends on arm length, not age or height. I'll help you work this out at the start so your child is comfortable from day one.

What should I bring to the first lesson?

Just yourselves and a sense of excitement! If you already have a violin and music, do bring them along. Otherwise, don't worry — we'll sort everything out together.

Lessons & Structure

How long are lessons, and how often should we meet?

For young beginners, I typically recommend 30-minute weekly lessons — they're focused without being overwhelming. Older children and adults often prefer 45 or 60-minute sessions as their playing develops.

Do you teach beginners, or is some experience required?

Complete beginners of all ages are very welcome! Whether you're signing up your 4-year-old or finally pursuing a lifelong dream yourself, I'd love to help you get started.

What music methods or programmes do you use?

I use a mix of approaches tailored to each student. The goal is always to make learning enjoyable while building solid technique.

Do you offer group lessons as well as individual tuition?

Lessons are individual, which means you get my full attention every session. This is especially valuable in those early stages when good habits really matter.

Practice

How much should my child (or I) practise each day?

Little and often is the magic formula! Young beginners do brilliantly with 10–15 minutes a day, while older children and adults typically benefit from 20–30 minutes. Regular short practice is far more effective than one long session at the weekend.

How do I make practice effective at home?

I try to always send students home with clear, simple instructions for what to work on. Practising at the same time each day helps build a routine, and for younger children, a parent sitting nearby to offer encouragement makes a big difference.

What if we miss a practice week — will it set us back?

Life happens, and that's completely okay! One quieter week won't derail progress. The important thing is just getting back into the routine the following week.

Exams & Progress

Do students work towards ABRSM grades?

Yes! I prepare students for ABRSM graded exams when they're ready. That said, exams are never compulsory — some students thrive on the structure they bring, while others prefer to focus on pieces they love.

How do I know if my child is making progress?

You'll be able to hear it! I provide regular feedback, so you always know what your child is working on and where they're shining.

Do you prepare students for school orchestras or youth ensembles?

Absolutely — joining an ensemble is a fantastic step and something I really encourage. If your child is keen, I'll help build the skills and confidence they need to take that leap.

Practicalities

Where do lessons take place?

Lessons are held at a music centre in our local town, which is a lovely environment for learning. Details of the location will be shared when you get in touch to book.

What are your fees, and how do I pay?

Please get in touch directly for current fee information.

What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?

I ask for as much notice as possible if you need to cancel or reschedule — at least 24 hours where you can.

Do you offer a trial lesson?

Yes! I offer a first trial lesson so you can get a feel for things before committing. It's a great chance to ask questions and see if we're a good fit.

Repertoire & Style

What styles of music do you teach?

My teaching is rooted in classical training, but I love to keep things varied and fun! We'll work on a mix of classical pieces, folk tunes, and well-known songs to keep students engaged and inspired.

Can students choose pieces they want to learn?

Absolutely — I love it when students bring their own enthusiasm to lessons! If there's a favourite song you'd love to play, let me know and we'll see what we can do.
